On Thursday, August 2, 2012, hundreds of donors, staff, physicians, volunteers and community supporters gathered on the roof of the Mississauga Hospital’s parking garage to get a bird’s eye view of a new 10,000 lb. magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine as it was lifted and delivered by a large crane through the rooftop.

In 1997, the Missisauga Hospital (formerly Trillium Health Centre - Mississauga) was one of the first community hospitals in Canada to use an MRI system, but the original unit needed to be replaced. Inspired to respond to the increasing need for advanced diagnostic imaging services, donors in the community joined forces with Trillium Health Centre Foundation to support the $5 million project to purchase a new MRI machine for our community.

"This new MRI machine is a great example of teamwork. The hospital and the Foundation worked very hard to bring this new MRI to our community, identifying the need and working with the community to raise funds to fulfill that need,” said Peter Willson, Chair, Trillium Health Centre Foundation Board of Directors. “With 6,000 gifts totalling $5 million, our community responded with impressive enthusiasm and we are incredibly grateful for their relentless commitment to the health care of our community."

The new machine will increase access to advanced cardiac scans and increase efficiency by reducing the procedure time for many types of scans. The patient experience will be enhanced, as the larger width and shorter depth of the magnet’s bore is less claustrophobic and more accommodating for larger patients.

More than 6,000 gifts from generous donors in our community made our new, state-of-the-art MRI machine possible. Because of them, and because of heroes like YOU who go above and beyond, we are able to take health care at our hospital to new heights!
